The Doula Book is a must have for anyone wanting to really dive in and find out how and what a Doula can do to help them throughout their pregnancy and birth.
This book is also a definite read full of resources and information for those wanting to train as a Doula.
Written by renowned authors Marshal H. Klaus, MD, John H. Kennell, MD, and Phyllis H. Klaus, MFT, LMSW, this book has been updated and revised with new research and statistics, it is not the most riveting read, but it is very informative.
The information contained in this book begins with describing the need for support in labour, whether the mother chooses to birth at home or within the hospital system. Explaining how supporting the mother is vital in helping her achieve a positive birth. It goes into detail of the special role a Doula has in enhancing the mothers birth experience, by giving the mother the support and tools for reducing the discomfort, pain and anxiety that may come with childbirth.
Keeping the mother as pain free and relaxed as possible is one of the Doula’s main priorities and this book has an plenty of ideas and resources for ways to help do that.
It offers research and information on how hiring a doula can decrease the mother’s chances of having a caesarean, the need for interventions and pain medication and can help shorten the labour.
It also has a great chapter for fathers in childbirth, helping any partner that may be unsure about hiring a doula, having them see the value and benefits of hiring one to go through this experience with them.
The end of the book also contains some relaxation, visualization and meditations to use before and during the birth with a great resources list.
I found this book to be extremely insightful, informative, a quick and easy read. I would most certainly recommend it to anyone wanting to know what to look for and expect when hiring a Doula.
A wonderful reference book for all those people wanting to train as a Doula.
