Elke Adams - Student Doula

My name is Elke Adams, mother of two, Earth lover, and a spiritual soul, settled in the Mid-North of South Australia on Nukunu land.

I am a fierce homebirth and VBAC advocate, being a HBAC mother myself. I have had two vastly different pregnancies, births, and postpartum periods. My first birth was Earth-shattering, and it unravelled me to my core. I re-emerged from this, and my second birth was full of power. I changed my support team and my birthing environment, I was educated, and I was the one in charge. It showed me how powerful we as women are, and how birth is such an innate, primal ceremony. This magical, undisturbed, physiological homebirth was the greatest thing I have ever done. I know the magic and the pain of varying births, and I wish for all women to feel supported to step into their power, take charge of their births and have a positive, supported postpartum where they trust their instincts, they trust their ability and they trust that they are the true expert of their body and baby.

These experiences drove me to become a doula so I could be a pebble to create ripples of knowledge, provide support and change the narrative in my small sphere of influence. Women need supportive and like-minded women to hold space for them during such a transformative time in their life. A lot of women today are lacking ‘community’ that women in “her-story” have had, we were not meant to walk through the journey of pregnancy, birth and postpartum alone, yet our society condones this. I aim to be a safe space for women and their partners and, although I am only one person, to be part of their ‘village’ in the postpartum period. I walk alongside women as they empower themselves.

Birth is a rite of passage which begins in pregnancy and has a profound effect on the woman for the rest of her life, her experience imprints on her, influencing every aspect of her life, but especially her mothering and how she feels about herself and her body.  I am a support to, and advocate for, women in this sacred time, providing evidence-based information, education, and support so that women can enjoy the process and have confidence to make informed decisions that are best for themselves and their baby and to be prepared to navigate whichever path her birthing takes. To take ownership of the journey.

This work is important for me to be a gentle rebellion against modern society’s views and to hold space for, support and walk beside women into empowerment like we are meant to during this critical and transformative time. A woman’s birth affects every aspect of her life, but especially her mothering and how she feels about herself and her body. It is important work because as mothers, we are the life-givers of humanity. A broken mother cannot do her best work for her children. We see too many broken mothers emerging from birth and too many mothers that outsource their authority. Mothers know themselves and their baby best over anyone. Supporting a mother is always important work. It is important work to reduce the number of broken mothers emerging from the system and increase the number of mothers who emerge from birth feeling confident and powerful in their abilities. It is important work to support mothers during the most transformative, powerful, and vulnerable time of their lives. It is important work to help change the birth narrative and help women recognise and access their true power, while feeling valued, supported and held.

An empowering birth doesn’t look like a particular birth, women have different values, wants and needs, I support women to follow their instincts, follow their own path to birthing and mothering that they can feel inside, however this looks to the woman, there is no singular ‘right’ way to birth, only her way.

My philosophy is bringing birth back to the woman’, meaning I advocate for you, your choices, your goals, your wants and needs. I will provide you with evidence-based information so you can make the best decisions for you and your baby. I support you to prepare emotionally and physically for your birth, to step into your true power and to birth your way. I will support and advocate for you whole-heartedly and unbiasedly. You are in the driver’s seat; you are in charge of your pregnancy and birth. Modern birth culture has become over-medicalised and taken away the true magic of birth. I am there to help facilitate the best possible birth experience where you are in the driver’s seat whichever path it takes, and to ‘nurture the nurturer’ postpartum. The needs and wellbeing of you, the mother, is at the forefront of my mind and my service reflects this. You know your body and baby better than anyone else, your intuition is a powerful gift. You have the power within you, you know the way to pregnancy, to birth, to nourishing to mothering, the power to know your own unique way, a way like no other. I will support you during this magical rite of passage and walk alongside you as you empower yourself.

With warmth & love,
Elke x.
