Looking beyond baby’s position: learn Optimal Maternal Positioning

Looking beyond baby’s position: learn Optimal Maternal Positioning

Birth professionals across Australia have a rare opportunity to attend Optimal Maternal Positioning (OMP) Live Training, with workshops taking place in multiple cities including Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Newcastle, Hobart and Townsville.

This hands-on training is designed for doulas, midwives, childbirth educators, physiotherapists and other birth professionals who want to deepen their understanding of the biomechanics of pregnancy and labour and gain practical tools to support women more effectively.

What is Optimal maternal positioning?

Optimal Maternal Positioning (OMP) is an evidence-informed approach to preparing and supporting the body during pregnancy, labour and postpartum. Rather than focusing only on the baby’s position, OMP looks at the mother’s body, alignment, mobility and tension patterns and how these influence labour progress.

Through practical techniques and guided positioning strategies, OMP helps birth professionals support women to:

  • Create more space and mobility in the pelvis
  • Reduce tension and discomfort in pregnancy
  • Support the baby’s movement through the pelvis
  • Encourage more efficient labour progress
  • Respond confidently when labour stalls or becomes challenging

The approach integrates biomechanics, movement and real-world labour support, giving practitioners practical skills they can immediately use with their clients.

What you’ll learn

The workshop focuses on practical, hands-on techniques that can be used during pregnancy and labour, including:

  • Pelvic alignment and mobility protocols
  • Techniques to reduce soft-tissue tension
  • Active birth positioning strategies
  • Understanding how the baby moves through the pelvis
  • Practical troubleshooting tools when labour progress slows

OMP is particularly valuable for birth professionals who want to work with the body’s natural mechanics rather than relying on interventions when labour becomes challenging.

Why this training is valuable for birth workers

For doulas and midwives supporting physiological birth, OMP provides a deeper understanding of how maternal movement, posture and alignment influence labour mechanics.

It strengthens your ability to:

  • support labour progression naturally
  • help women find positions that reduce discomfort
  • understand what may be happening biomechanically during labour
  • offer practical tools that complement your existing birth support skills.

Perth workshop – limited places

The Perth workshop on Sunday, 19th April offers WA birth professionals the chance to learn these techniques in a live, interactive environment alongside colleagues from across the maternity care community.

If you are a doula, midwife, childbirth educator or bodyworker supporting pregnant women, this training can be a valuable addition to your professional toolkit.
