Grace Like Scarlett written by Adriel Booker
Book Review by doula Amada Kusel
Miscarriage is something that happens to many, many women – 1 in 4 pregnancies end in a miscarriage, most within the first trimester.
In Australia alone, over 100,000 couples are affected by miscarriage every year. It’s becoming more socially acceptable to share about, but still something that is often accompanied by shame, confusion, isolation and worrying about future pregnancies.
Whether you’ve experienced a miscarriage for yourself, or desire to help a dear friend, Grace Like Scarlett by Adriel Booker is a great place to start.

Adriel details the stories of her three consecutive miscarriages, alongside other women’s stories. She provides practical tips for things like walking other children through grief, ideas for remembering your little one, journal prompts to help you process, and even has a section for loved ones/partners to read.
This book is not a “fix it” band aid for the mother who is suffering, but an invitation to ask the hard questions, to be vulnerable when you’re ready, and to understand more about the process of grief after losing a baby, no matter how far along.

I haven’t experienced a miscarriage myself, and initially read this book in order to understand more about what women walk through, and how I can come alongside them as a friend and a doula.
Now, I send this book along with a small self-care focused gift to any of my friends who experience a miscarriage, and sadly, there has been quite a few.
I would also recommend this book if you’re a birth worker of any kind. It will equip you with further compassion, understanding, and guidance to help more women under your care, your sister, your cousin, your neighbour.
With the prevalence of miscarriage, it’s undeniably an important topic to have tools to come alongside women and their families.
