Book Review: Reclaiming Childbirth as a Rite of Passage by Dr Rachel Reed
Written by Doula Melissa Grimes

When I first started my doula training, I knew that birth was an important event in a woman’s life. What I did not fully appreciate was just how deeply birth can shape a woman emotionally, psychologically and spiritually.

Reading Reclaiming Childbirth as a Rite of Passage completely changed the way I think about birth.

This book was written by Australian midwife and researcher Rachel Reed, and it explores the idea that childbirth is far more than simply a process of getting a baby out safely. Birth is a rite of passage. It is a transformational event that can change a woman forever.

In modern maternity care, birth is often treated as a medical event that needs to be carefully monitored and managed. While medical care absolutely has an important role, especially when complications arise, this book reminds us that birth is also a profound life experience that deserves respect, trust and reverence.

What Does “Rite of Passage” Mean?

A rite of passage is a significant event that marks a transition from one stage of life to another. In the case of childbirth, a woman is not only giving birth to her baby. She is also being born as a mother. This concept resonated deeply with me.

As women, we often spend so much time preparing for the baby, buying clothes, setting up the nursery and attending appointments, that we forget to prepare for the transformation happening within ourselves. Pregnancy, labour and postpartum change us physically, emotionally and spiritually.

After reading this book, I began to see birth in a completely different light. Birth is not something to simply “get through.” It is an initiation into motherhood.

What I Loved Most About This Book

What I loved most about this book was how it combined evidence-based research with a deeply respectful and intuitive understanding of birth.

Rachel Reed explains the physiology of labour, the hormonal processes involved, and the importance of feeling safe and supported. At the same time, she acknowledges that birth can be one of the most powerful and transformative experiences in a woman’s life.

The book validates something many women instinctively feel but struggle to articulate: that how they are treated during birth matters.

It matters whether they feel heard.

It matters whether they feel safe.

It matters whether they are given genuine choices.

It matters whether they are respected.

This message aligns strongly with my own beliefs and the reason I am becoming a doula.

My Biggest Takeaway

My biggest takeaway from this book was the understanding that birth is not only about the outcome, but also about the experience. Of course, a healthy mother and baby are incredibly important. But this book helped me realise that emotional wellbeing matters too. A woman may leave hospital with a healthy baby and still feel traumatised if she felt ignored, pressured or disrespected during her labour.

On the other hand, a woman whose birth unfolds differently from her original plan can still feel empowered and proud if she felt informed, supported and involved in decision-making.

This was a powerful reminder that birth is not defined by whether a woman had a vaginal birth, epidural or caesarean. What matters most is how she felt during the experience.

How This Book Changed Me as a Future Doula

This book reinforced why I want to become a doula. I want women to feel informed, confident and supported as they navigate pregnancy and birth. I want them to understand that their instincts matter. I want them to know they have choices. I want them to feel safe enough to surrender to labour. I want them to look back on their birth feeling respected and empowered, regardless of how the birth unfolded.

The book also deepened my appreciation for the postpartum period. A rite of passage does not end the moment the baby is born. A mother needs time, support and care as she integrates her birth experience and adjusts to her new identity.

Why This Book Is So Beneficial for Women

I believe this book would benefit every pregnant woman, regardless of whether she is planning a home birth, hospital birth, public care or private care.

The book helps women:

  • Understand the physiology of labour
  • Build trust in their bodies
  • Reflect on what kind of birth experience they want
  • Recognise the importance of emotional safety
  • Understand how the maternity system influences birth
  • Feel more confident asking questions and making informed decisions
  • Prepare for the transition into motherhood

Perhaps most importantly, the book gives women permission to view birth as something powerful and meaningful rather than something to fear.

Why I Would Recommend This Book to My Clients

As a doula, I would highly recommend this book to women who want to approach birth with more understanding and confidence.

It is particularly valuable for women who:

  • Feel anxious about birth
  • Want a more physiological birth
  • Have experienced a previous traumatic birth
  • Are seeking to understand the emotional significance of birth
  • Want to feel more connected to the transition into motherhood

I believe the book helps women shift from fear to trust.

It encourages them to see birth as a transformative journey rather than simply a medical event.

Personal Reflection

Reading this book felt incredibly validating.

Much of what Rachel Reed describes resonated with what I have observed in my own experiences as a mother and throughout my doula training.

Birth has the potential to be one of the most powerful experiences in a woman’s life. It can leave her feeling strong, capable and deeply connected to herself. But when a woman feels unsupported or traumatised, the impact can be long-lasting.

This book strengthened my belief that women deserve better support during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

It also reinforced my passion for creating a business that helps women feel informed, nurtured and respected through this major life transition.

Final Thoughts

Reclaiming Childbirth as a Rite of Passage is one of the most meaningful books I have read. It combines science, midwifery wisdom and a profound respect for the transformational nature of birth. This book reminds us that childbirth is not only about bringing a baby into the world. It is also about the birth of a mother.

I believe this book has the power to change the way women think about birth and the way birth workers support them.
