Book review: Herbal Therapy: Simple, Safe Remedies for Pregnancy, Childbirth, And Newborns by Winfred Schielke written by Cassandra Fieg
Medicinal herbs have been used by wise women for more than a million years. Mothers often look for alternative therapies during the childbearing period, making this book a fantastic resource for anyone wanting to approach conception, pregnancy, birth and postpartum from a more natural perspective.
After looking for the right book to review, I came across this one and read the first few pages. Instantly I felt a deep connection to my heritage.
My Oma (grandmother) has practiced herbal medicine since she could walk, foraging with her own mother who was a herbal healer in the early 1900’s.
I would love to carry on that knowledge to the future generations of my family before it is lost to history, as it has been for many others.
It is recommended in the book to read it through in its entirety before using it as a reference as problems arise. There are some remedies that would be beneficial as a prevention for problems, which is why it is important to read through before using as a guide.
The jam-packed index is thorough and convenient, starting with each stage of the childbearing year/s (conception, pregnancy, birth, postnatal and infancy).
My personal favourite is the “herbal pharmacy” where you will find information on identifying, growing, buying and preparing plants for herbal remedies.
A valuable resource that I, as a doula, will be using is the recipe lists for remedies that are the authors favourite and have been tried and tested by wise women and birth workers for generations.
It’s important that herbs are used with respect and knowledge, and this book is a fantastic guide with clear and helpful information to assist you with using herbs safely and responsibly.
